John Patrick, known for his use of recycled and organic fabrics, told us he designed this season’s collection with old-fashioned ideals about self-sufficiency in mind.
“And yet, we really need to become the face of modernity,” he said.
Indeed, the designer found some pretty modern ways of expressing himself, teaming up with knitwear designer Amanda Henderson, filmmaker Jennifer Sharpe, and Sourcemap.org, an MIT-based Web site.
Together, they created a seamless group of handknit sweaters from local wool, mapped the details of the sweaters’ supply chain, and made a short film about it. Amanda Henderson told us about the handwork that gave the sweaters’ their rich texture, and the film and accompanying sourcemap truly does give a lovely bit of insight into the beauty beyond the surface of the textiles.
